So I should probably start off by saying that I was not some crazy alcoholic who felt that I had to have it all the time no matter where I was. I didn’t get violent. I didn’t drink and drive. However, I was the one that would start drinking with the intention of having a few drinks only to find out that it ended up being half a bottle. I was making decisions that impacted my health and my family. It took me far too long to really come to terms with the issues that I had with drinking but I eventually did and it is now been 30 days since I’ve had a drop.
I can honestly say that things seem a little bit clear for me. I don’t have any sort of effects from the post drinking issues such as hangovers. I feel like I’m less tired and I sleep a little bit better without it even though it was something I used to help me stay asleep. it isn’t Earth shattering, but it is definitely something that’s important to me. Another thing I noticed is my resting heart rate.
My heart rate – when I was being more healthy and training for a half marathon and NOT drinking as much – has always been in the high 40s to low 50s. Well, above is the last 30 days. Prior to quitting drinking, I was sitting in the mid 60s. I am now back down to the high 40s.
So it matters for me.
As far as everything else goes for today, I woke up and tried to run knowing that I was going to be pretty sore after leg day. I ended up doing about four and a half miles but it took me a little bit longer than I would have wanted it to. I also had to roll out code to the site today which takes the vast majority of the day, but I was still able to get my steps in and only missed out on one hour of my 250+ steps. I was very hungry by the time I got home and made my dinner but that is to be expected when it’s been about 21 hours since I last ate. So I subsequently stuffed myself and am now relaxing.
Tomorrow will be somewhat bittersweet as it will be the last time I lift for at least five weeks. Hopefully I can make the best of it and enjoy my weekend. I get to spend some time with my kids and granddaughter (yes, I am a grandpa for those who didn’t know) as well as go and see The Lion King with my wife.
