Valentine’s Day is a day I’ve never really liked. I celebrated it “as necessary” in the past but fortunately my wife feels the same way I do. It’s February 14th, it’s Friday this year and it is just another day in the life. Why dictate when I can or cannot show love to my wife or others? I do it daily which makes me awesome.
However, the history of Valentine’s Day is actually much more interesting. Let me rephrase that; the not-so-true-history of Valentine’s Day is much more interesting. The story goes that Saint Valentine was a priest in Rome who was imprisoned because he was performing marriages he shouldn’t and being a Christian. When in prison, he healed the jailer’s daughter and his captor liked him enough that he wanted to convert him to Roman paganism but he refused and instead tried to convert his captor to Christianity. This ended up causing him to be executed. Prior to being executed, he wrote a letter to the daughter and signed it “Your Valentine.”
Of course, most of this is probably false. But it makes for a nice story. Someone standing up for what they believe in, falling in love, knowing his end is coming and ultimately dying for what he believed in.
Today was pretty much a normal day for me. I gave my kids some candies and letters, let them know I love them and then worked. I went to the gym as normal, walked around as normal and pretty much had a normal day. I did take the family out to dinner in the spirit of the day, but it was also because I wasn’t in the mood for chicken quesadillas today.
Karate didn’t do much damage to me which was very nice. My legs were still somewhat sore, but that is about it. Oh, other than my knuckles being scabbed over and bruised, that is. That’s what I get for forgetting my wraps and pounding on the heavy bag like it was a chunk of ground meat.
I still hit the gym and did my lifting along with some running which felt really good. I worked on cooling down properly and stretching more than normal and – at least right now – I feel really good. I guess we’ll see how I feel in the morning when I (probably) go to karate. Supposedly they spar on Saturday and I’m really not looking forward to that. I don’t know how much better I’ll feel after that.
Hopefully better than those with VD.
