I apologize for the delay in my post. I had a rather active weekend and didn’t really have time to sit down and blog.
My daughter turned 13 this past weekend and I decided to surprise her with a visit. She also had a wrestling tournament so I was able to stay and watch her wrestle for the first time. It was a great weekend for me though it involved a lot of driving and waking up early.
Watching my daughter wrestle brought back a lot of memories for me. I never did wrestle in “little league” or in junior high, and I really had no intention of wrestling when I got into high school. I was, in fact, a basketball player for many years and that is what I thought I would be doing. I even had the high school basketball coach promise me a position on the varsity team if I tried out.
So why didn’t I?
I honestly don’t know. Some decisions I made didn’t seem to have a rhyme or reason but they seemed to be the right decision. One of those was wrestling instead of basketball. Would I have made it to college as a basketball player and then maybe gone professional? I highly doubt it. I didn’t think I was that good. Did I get anywhere from wrestling? Nope, didn’t even try to go to college to do it. But I am pretty positive that it was the right decision to make.
I had a friend who was on the wrestling team and he said they were looking for someone to record the matches so they could watch them and take notes. I decided I’d do it since it meant I got to go on the trips. Well, the coach informed me that if I was going to go on the trips I had to do the practices. I decided that if I was going to do the practices that I was going to join the team.
And so it was done.
I had a nice little career in high school. Won region 3 times (I believe) and many tournament championships, but I never did win a medal at the state tournament. I broke the record for the fastest pin in the state of Utah but my coach never submitted it to the record books. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot and enjoyed passing on some of what I knew to my daughter.
After driving down Saturday and spending the day with my two beautiful daughters, seeing my parents and niece and then coming back on Sunday I went on a short date with my wife, watched some television and then went to dinner with my family.
Great way to spend a weekend.
