So this is late yet again due to my Kyokushin class. Fingers were too beat up to type…
No, not really, but it was the first actual class led by the sensei that I had gone to and it certainly was a different workout than what I had done on Tuesday. Don’t get me wrong, I worked out very well both days but Thursday was quite brutal.
We started out doing lots of stretching and loosening up which I know is important in all activities but I felt it was very important here. Once we did that, we did a lot of conditioning including shadow boxing, practicing kicks and punches and elbows, then we grabbed the giant heavy bags and practiced fighting with them; kicking correctly and punching, moving and all types of different strikes. In between all of these activities there were lots of push-ups and scissor kicks and other workouts we had to do before he let us rest. Then we got to the good part.
And by good I mean painful.
We then spent the next little while trading off kicks and then punches. Each partner would punch the other person in the stomach as hard as that person could handle for 2 minutes. After that, we switched partners and did the same thing with another person. Finally, we finished off with hitting various parts of the body with the hand. The goal is to get people used to being hit and to build a pain tolerance. While I think I have a pretty good tolerance for pain, I apparently don’t have a good tolerance of being hit in the same location again and again. My abdomen has a bruise in one spot and I am pretty sure that was the one spot both guys hit over and over. But I guess I’ll have to get used to it if I want to continue.
The disappointing thing is that I apparently burned fewer calories on Thursday than I did on Tuesday. The workout was the same length, but I feel we did a heck of a lot more than on Tuesday so I am not sure why my Bodymedia says I burned less. The same thing happened on my brother-in-laws so I don’t think it is incorrect.
Either way, I got a great workout, some bruises and bloody knuckles (push-ups on the knuckles are fun…) and sore muscles. Just what the doctor ordered.
Meals:
Breakfast – Protein shake
Snacks – Protein and fruit bar, cookies and milk
Lunch – Tater tot casserole and baked broccoli
Dinner – Zucchini lasagna
Exercise:
An hour+ of walking at work
2 hours of Kyokushin
good grief that sounds brutal!
I have actually competed in french kickboxing (not recently 😦 ) and we didn’t do any of that :-S
but every discipline is different, and every teacher too 🙂
as long as you yourself (mostly 🙂 )
that last sentence should read “as long as you enjoy yourself” 🙂
I did enjoy myself. It will take a very long time to get used to getting hit (if I ever get used to it) but I am glad my bro-in-law recommended it. It is going to be fun and I plan on going the full course and competing for my belt colors. Maybe someday I can claim to be a black belt in Kyokushin 😀
That would be awesome 🙂 and a brilliant thing to aim for 😀
