As one might have expected after walking about 32 miles in a day… I was pooped on Monday. Not just I-want-to-be-lazy kind of pooped, but full-blown I don’t want to do anything kind of pooped. It all started when I woke up. As soon as my alarm went off (I got to sleep in until 4:35 AM) I wanted to go back to bed. I normally don’t call out unless I’m sick or there is some other major issue, but I was thiiiiis close to picking up my phone and making the call. I knew that it would only cause issues for myself and everyone else, so I got out of bed and headed to work.
Once there, I informed my friend that I would not be walking today. Normally we walk for both of our breaks and our lunch. Monday, however, we sat on the couch and watched television. Unfortunately it was “Let’s Make a Deal” followed by “The Price is Right” but it was still relaxing. For lunch we went to the Cafe and actually ate where we are “supposed” to while ESPN was on the jumbo screen.
After work I walked in the house, threw my stuff on the counter and fell into bed. I passed out quickly enough and stayed asleep for about 3 hours until my wife let me know that dinner was ready. I probably would have slept all night long had I not been woken up. I ate dinner, watched a movie with the family and then went to bed again.
All of this made me realize something…
I’m taking the week off.
I know, I know. I’ve taken time off from working out in the past, but I think I really deserve it this time. I logged over 300 miles of walking during the past 4 weeks. 300 miles! That is more than I put on my car in that same time frame. I woke up early to do races, woke up early to do long walks, moved every minute of the day that I could and pushed myself as much as I possibly could. And I think that I deserve a bit of time away from the game.
That doesn’t mean I am going to gorge myself on food or simply sit on my butt for the next week, but I am not going to go out of my way to walk around. I’m going to relax on my breaks and lunches. I’m going to hang out with my wife and kids after work. I’m going to enjoy myself beyond exercise for a little while.
I think I earned it.
