We’ve all probably heard about how taking 10,000 steps per day can help keep you in shape. Or maybe it’s that 10,000 steps is the minimum you should take to be healthy. Or maybe it’s that 10,000 steps is a nice round number that they can throw at you. I don’t really know the reason that 10,000 steps is recommended, I just know that my sister told me about how she strives to take 10,000 steps each day and my BodyMedia device has a section that tells me how many steps I take so it must be important. That said… I spit in your general direction Mr. 10,000 steps!
That’s right. I looked back through my history of wearing the BodyMedia device and found that on fewer than 5 occasions did I have less than 10,000 steps. And on those days, it was still nearly there (around 8,000). Most days I am sitting around 14,000 and sometimes up as high as 20,000+ steps (that happened today). Now that I am riding public transportation and I have to wait a while before I can leave work, I find that I take a good chunk of steps while waiting around for it. Is it going to make a difference in helping me lose weight and staying healthy? I don’t know for sure. But it sure is exciting to see what number I hit each day.
